5th Meeting of the UNEP Working Group on Nitrogen

The UNEP Working Group on Nitrogen was established to facilitate the implementation of resolutions 4/14 and 5/2 on “Sustainable nitrogen management”. The fifth meeting of the UNEP Working Group on Nitrogen is scheduled to take place on 09 January 2024, followed by an informal expert meeting on 10 January 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya, and online.

The 5th Meeting of the UNEP Working Group on Nitrogen, scheduled to take place from 9 to 10 January 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya, marks a critical juncture in global efforts to address the escalating nitrogen crisis. Nitrogen, an essential nutrient for life, has become a major environmental threat due to excessive human-induced emissions, leading to air and water pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change.

The Working Group, established to facilitate the implementation of resolutions 4/14 and 5/2 on "Sustainable nitrogen management" under the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), will bring together experts and representatives from governments, academia, and civil society to discuss and advance strategies for reducing nitrogen pollution and promoting sustainable nitrogen management practices.

Key themes expected to be addressed at the meeting include:

  • Progress in implementing UNEA resolutions on sustainable nitrogen management: The Working Group will review the progress made by member states and stakeholders in implementing resolutions 4/14 and 5/2, identifying challenges and opportunities for further action.

  • National action plans and best practices: Member states will share their experiences in developing and implementing national action plans for sustainable nitrogen management, showcasing successful approaches and lessons learned.

  • Scientific and technological advancements: Experts will present the latest scientific findings and technological advancements in nitrogen management, providing insights for developing effective mitigation strategies.
